X-Men Origins: Wolverine Hands-On

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Hands-On
We've been anxious to get our hands on Raven Software's upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine game since getting the rundown on the promising game from our Australian compadres. As longtime comic-book fans, we've pretty much resigned ourselves to the fact that Wolverine would likely always be neutered in some fashion as far as games were concerned. A slightly mental Canadian killing machine with a short temper, an indestructible metal skeleton with matching claws, and the ability to heal just about any wound doesn't fit into your standard game archetype. That said, Raven seems to be finding its way with its upcoming take on the mighty mutant. We had the chance to get our hands on a few levels of the Xbox 360 version of the game and were very happy with where Raven's going with the game. ReadMore

E3 2009: Following rumors of a new PSP and Slimline PS3, the House of PlayStation takes the stage with its newest games and technology.

Kratos knows how to deal with leaksLOS ANGELES--Of the Big Three press conferences at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony's could be the most newsworthy if even half of the announcements rumored to take place actually happen. Whether it's a UMD-less version of the PSP, a new motion-sensing controller, a redesigned PlayStation 3 (perhaps with a price cut), or, say, actual games, the scuttlebutt and speculation surrounding the press conference has been building for months.

While much of the anticipation for Sony's conference is built around whispers of what might be, there are some safer bets about titles that might be featured. Sony already has a lineup of heavy hitters confirmed for the show, including God of War III, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, MAG, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Heavy Rain: The Origami Killer, and Pixeljunk Shooter, all of which will be featured during GameSpot's live stage show direct from the E3 show floor.

To find out just which rumors are true (or even partly true), bookmark this page and come back at 11 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday, June 2, for a live blog of the event. GameSpot will also be streaming live video of the event--as well as those of Microsoft and Nintendo--alongside the blog as part of its wide-ranging E3 coverage.

A New Challenger Approaches: Chris Plante, the Games Editor

Like Shane riding off into the sunset, Russ Frushtick, former Games Editor of UGO.com, has left town for a sunny new pasture. Unlike Shane, he was not fatally wounded.*

That can only mean I'm the new sheriff in town.

The gig won't be easy. Russ was an extraordinary editor who, for a couple years, was a one-man team. I'll need a lot of help and support to build off Russ' work and make UGO Games into something that not only I will be proud to helm, but you'll be proud to read.

That's why I'm pulling out a few tricks. Some familiar faces to the 1UP community have kindly volunteered to help me, and I'm holding them to it. We're going to try out some new things, and hopefully promote my number one goal: clear the path between you folks and the developers making your favorite games.

Hope you take some time to stick around my new corner of the Internet. And please, as I've said many times on before, let me know what you want to see. I'm writing the site for you.

Your fellow gunslinger,

Chris Plante

*Shane was a popular cowboy film and the fulcrum in the dénouement of the Kevin Spacey/Samuel L. Jackson hostage flick, The Negotiator.

In Case You Aren’t Sick of Music Games…

Guitar Hero 5

This upcoming title from Activision will let you play four of anything. Now, nobody has to fight over who gets to play the guitar. There won’t be any snoozing on boring bass songs, and you can annoy the sin out of everyone around you by having four people tapping rubber guitars at the same time (if you can fit that many in your living room). Hey, you can even have your own little barbershop quartet and have four people singing. Whatever you do, it’ll be represented that way on stage as you play, which is is sort of neat. Sort of.

This four-player play-whatever-you-want-however-you-want setup will be available in all game modes. A new “Rockfest” mode will allow people to compete against each other. The difficulty level will go up as you hit sequential correct notes, and drop as you miss them. Points are tallied, the highest points wins, and you are just the coolest thing on the planet. The full list of songs hasn’t been announced yet for this title, but info has been dropped that the lineup will include:

The Rolling Stones“Sympathy for the Devil”
Bob Dylan“All Along The Watchtower”
The White Stripes“Blue Orchid”
Santana“No One To Depend On (LIVE)”
Vampire Weekend“A-Punk”
Tom Petty - “Runnin Down a Dream”
Johnny Cash“Ring of Fire”
Kings of Leon“Sex on Fire”

That is an admittedly rad group. Of course, all previously downloaded music will work with Guitar Hero 5 as well.

Play Games Guitar HeroRock Band: Unplugged

No fifth button, no peripherals, no multiplayer. For this PSP title, you’ll use the directional pad to play notes, and you should game with your headphones on. If you’re into music games and use the PSP, you’ll probably try it out. If you don’t use the PSP and don’t care about music games, this isn’t going to convince you of anything. ‘Nuff said.

If you are one of those folks who is excited about Rock Band on the PSP, here is the full track list for Rock Band: Unplugged:

AFI - “Miss Murder”
All-American Rejects - “Move Along”
Audioslave - “Gasoline”
Black Tide - “Show Me the Way”
Freezepop - “Less Talk More Rock”
Jimmy Eat World - “The Middle”
The Killers - “Mr. Brightside”
Lacuna Coil - “Our Truth”
Lamb of God - “Laid to Rest”
Modest Mouse - “Float On”
Queens of the Stone Age - “3’s and 7’s”
System of a Down - “Chop Suey!”
Tenacious D - “Rock Your Socks”
3 Doors Down - “Kryptonite”
Alice in Chains - “Would?”
Blink 182 - “What’s My Age Again”
Foo Fighters - “Everlong”
Judas Priest - “Painkiller”
Lit - “My Own Worst Enemy”
Lush - “De-Luxe”
Mighty Mighty Bosstones - “Where’d You Go?”

Origins Awards Nominees 2009: Picks and Commentary

icv2 has published the list of Origins Awards nominees. The nominees are decided by retailers at the GAMA Trade Show, and then attendees of Origins vote on the winners, and are announced at a ceremony on site (which we’ve covered two years in a row now).

Opinions vary on the validity and choices made by both the nominating parties and the voters themselves, but they still remain the premiere awards that cover the entire adventure game industry, not just one sub-set. Plus, while it might not matter much to the average gamer who doesn’t attend Origins, it’s still an immense honor to the game designers and publishers to be recognized by the award. (Some day I shall have a Calliope of my own!)

Here’s the categories I know a good amount about the nominees, and what I think will win in each.
Board Games

My pick to win: Agricola, hands down. Not only has this been a consistent hit among the core “German-style” board gaming crowd, but also the Columbus board game club has a strong presence at Origins and will swing it over. Pandemic would be my guess for second, unless there’s a groundswell for dungeon crawling for TOMB.

Children’s, Family, and Party Games

My pick to win: This will be a battle of who can mobilize more effectively at Origins. Bucephalus is likely to have a strong showing at Origins this year and has been coming on strong, but Say Anything debuted at Origins last year (so has more of a built in audience) and isn’t splitting their votes between two different games, thus it gets my nod. In the end, though, they’re all good choices (though Baron Munchausen on that list, really?) and I’d happily recommend anything on the list.

Card Games

My pick to win: Dominion Dominion Dominion. As much as I’d love Monty Python Fluxx to win, Dominion is a mega-hit across multiple cross-sections of gaming (and in fact, occupies some conceptual ground with MPF) and I predict will easily pick up the award.

Non-Fiction

My pick to win: An interesting selection to be sure, and notice the lack of Dragon, Dungeon, AND Pathfinder. My guess is that none of those are particularly appealing to retailers nowadays. Kobold Guide to Game Design is great, as is Things We Think About Games (my favorite book about game design to come out in a while), but both are very niche game design products without a lot of exposure to the general audience. I don’t know if Privateer Press has a strong enough presence at Origins or not, so I give this a toss-up between the other two, with it falling to Tour de Lovecraft, both for subject matter and author.

Miniature Figure Game Rules

My pick to win: Another very strong category, which surprises me given how little attention miniatures games seem to have gotten in the past year. 40k is clearly the 800 lb. gorilla here, with WoW being more recognizable outside of the adventure game circle. However, both are somewhat controversial. Monsterpocalypse also has some followers, but also isn’t tearing up the world. For the combination of satisfying rules and name recognition, the winner here will be Classic Battletech: Tactical Operations. Note that this is not for the core rules (that won last year), but an expansion… which I think will still be enough.

Role-Playing Games

My pick to win: Two WotC games, two Cthulhu games, and Mouse Guard. Sorry Mouse Guard, as much as I love you, you’re toast. CthulhuTech has been getting a lot of attention, but was actually nominated last year from its previous publisher and lost. I think it’s going to come down to the two WotC games, and Star Wars is going to win that battle, since it has support from both 4e and non-4e fans, whereas I could easily see an organized campaign to vote against 4e.

Role-Playing Game Supplements

My pick to win: Once again, I think it’ll come down to the two WotC products, and Star Wars will win, especially when coupled with a popular license outside of RPGs. Plus, Star Wars stuff rocked the Ennies last year. Hero Lab, being a software program, is an unusual choice to put in this category, but I could see that pulling an upset.

Game Accessories

My pick to win: A very strange category, and seemingly one with some glaring absences as far as good gaming accessories go. This is a category that is really hurt by being decided by retailers, since there’s lots of good stuff that doesn’t hit retail channels. (Though whoever does Living Arcanis’s marketing has done a good job). I think this goes to the Munchkin product.

The Origins Award winners will be announced on site, on Saturday, June 27th.

Trust Sony to become the Year 2009 Best PSP Game

PSP: PlayStation PortableWhen is the middle of what to do to make a Sony PSP is better in this year, Koller explains:

"You can imagine some of the big franchise on the console that will come to PSP and make people feel very interested. Approximately the same as when they hear the announcement Rock Band and LittleBigPlanet. On another note, we try to discuss the case for a better what the PSP can do. From a marketing perspective we talked about the fact that the PSP can play movies and connect with the PS3, and other such things. To ensure that consumers understand what the PSP can do. "

As gaming features through the middle of the iPhone along with the dominance of the DS and DSi release not this old, Koller contradict the statement that says that things are the motivation for Sony. "This we do at this time is actually more like responses to attention-row game game and we see that consumers who want more," he said. "We want to meet the developers and say to them what the consumers want, because customers have told us that the PSP is the system that they love. 80% use it at least twice in a week then it is not something that just accumulate dust and halt in place. "

issues about the PSP-4000 has begun circulating since PSP-3000 was first announced. If true, whether it is just a renewal, or a PSP hardware 2, Koller still has not been mentioned. At least, this time the news will feel good enough for gamers who already own a PSP waiting for the big game series is present in the grip handheld gamers.
